Before 1965, Singapore and Malaysia were united under the same flag. Though now separate entities, Northern Singapore bears reminders of this sliver of the past. Most strikingly, the Johor-Singapore Causeway is connected to the neighbourhood of Woodlands. The North is also home to large expanses of greenery in Choa Chu Kang and Mandai where cemeteries, columbariums and Singapore’s various wildlife reserves co-exist in a well-tread balance between life and death. Last but not least, a recent slew of freak accidents and cat murders has granted Yishun its infamous reputation as Singapore’s most unusual neighbourhood – allegedly.
